Excessive Daytime Sleepiness
Daytime sleepiness is a common complaint in the general population. Most people, however, have the misconception that this is a normal part of life. Excessive daytime sleepiness can be an important and significant manifestation of a variety of sleep disorders including obstructive sleep apnea, narcolepsy, and periodic limb movement disorder. Additionally, excessive daytime sleepiness can be associated with many common neurologic conditions including migraine headaches, multiple sclerosis, stroke, and Parkinson's disease. In most instances, excessive daytime sleepiness can be treated and result in significant improvement in daytime functioning and quality of life. More importantly, daytime sleepiness can be dangerous when untreated as it can lead to motor vehicle accidents.
